Lecanora arthothelinella Lumbsch

  Thallus dispersed-verrucose to verruculose, yellowish white to yellowish grey or whitish grey, epruinose. Soredia absent. Prothallus not visible. Apothecia sessile, 0.3–1.0 mm diam.; disc orange-brown to wax-coloured, epruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, thick, ±verrucose to verruculose. Cortex hyaline, ±gelatinous, 25–35 µm thick laterally and 30–40 µm thick basally. Amphithecium with large crystals insoluble in KOH (pulicaris-type). Parathecium hyaline, with numerous small crystals insoluble in KOH, 10–15 µm thick. Epihymenium yellowish brown, c. 10–15 µm thick, with crystals and pigmentation soluble in KOH (chlarotera-type). Hymenium hyaline, inspersed with small crystals. Hypothecium and subhymenium hyaline. Paraphyses sparingly branched, not thickened apically. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 11.0–15.5 × 6.5–9.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C+ pale orange, Pd+ yellow to yellowish orange; containing atranorin (major), arthothelin (major), chloroatranorin (minor), 2,4-dichloronorlichexanthone (minor), 4,5-dichloronorlichexanthone (minor), isoarthothelin (minor) and thiophanic acid (minor).
     
  A corticolous species in mangroves and at rainforest margins in eastern Qld and N.S.W.; phorophytes include Leptospermum and Rhizophora. Also in Papua New Guinea and Central and South America.
